The Diversity Visa or DV visa lottery is a great way for foreign nationals who do not have any other realistic options for obtaining lawful permanent residency status in the United States. Each year the United States grants immigrant visas to a small number of foreign nationals who apply for the visa lottery. This year the U.S. will grant 55,000 DV visas
Who Qualifies?
Who qualifies for the visa lottery changes every year. The purpose of the program is to gain immigrants from countries who are under represented in U.S. immigration statistics. This year citizens of the following countries may apply for the visa lottery: Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (including Hong Kong SAR), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, Venezuela, and Vietnam. Natives of Macau SAR and Taiwan are eligible
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
In addition to being from one of the countries listed above, an applicant for the DV lottery must also meet the following requirements:
Must have at least a high school education or its equivalent, defined as successful completion of a 12-year course of formal elementary and secondary education; OR
Have two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience to perform. The Department of State will use the U.S. Department of Labor’s O*Net Online database to determine qualifying work experience.
How Much Does it Cost?
There is no fee to apply for the DV lottery.
How Do I Apply?
Every year the Department of State publishes instructions for how to complete a DV visa lottery application. To view this years instructions please visit the DV Visa Lottery Website.
All applications must be submitted online at the DV lottery website. Applications for this years lottery will not be accepted until the first week of October 2023.
When Can I Apply?
The deadline to apply for this years DV visa lottery is NOVEMBER 8, 2023.
